Dixio Desktop presents its new version

Marc Centelles - February 7th, 2012

The new Dixio Desktop 3 (DD3) is to be launched in the next few weeks. Semantix already has the new version of the smart dictionary, with a new design. Dixio’s new look & feel will enhance users’ experience, as this simpler design makes the product more intuitive and usable.

Unlike its predecessor, Dixio Desktop 3 is no longer completely free. However, there is a Trial version enabling free use of all the smart dictionary’s functionalities for a month. At the end of that month, the Premium functions are disabled to leave the Free version.

This is what the new Dixio Desktop 3 will look like:

Dixio Desktop 3 continues to provide immediate context-specific responses. When a user clicks on a term or concept that he or she doesn’t understand, Dixio analyzes the context, determines the language and instantly provides the best definition in a pop-up window.

Free or Premium?

The Free and Premium versions differ in the following aspects:

FREE PREMIUM
With advertising No advertising

That’s all we can tell you for now, but we can say that there will be more novelties and surprises in the new version of the smart dictionary. We will keep you informed.

Tablets and usability. Objective: convenient and easy to use

Marc Centelles - January 31st, 2012

Jakob NielsenEach time a new device is launched, whether it is a tablet, an e-reader or a mobile phone, it is automatically compared with its predecessors and, of course, with its competitors. Manufacturers make an effort to make devices increasingly usable, convenient and intuitive, following the guidelines established by Jakob Nielsen, the usability guru.

According to Nielsen, the general trend in mobile phones is for increasingly lightweight devices, with larger screens and easy-to-use keyboards. Tablet users are demanding the same features. In our opinion, the IPad 2, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Sony Tablet are good examples of enhanced usability:

  • iPad 2: it weighs 600 grams and is only 0.88 cm thick. Its Dual Core A5 integrated processor makes it faster than its predecessor. Its graphic performance is up to nine times greater than that of the first iPad. It also includes the Facetime function, which enables us to talk to and see our contacts at the same time, and a gyroscope, something like a motion sensor, which provides much more precision when playing games on the device.
  • Samsung galaxy Tab 10.1: tablet with a 10.1” touch screen. It has not buttons because everything is done on the screen, so it can be used to watch high definition videos, see photos or play games. This device comes with the latest version of Honeycomb for Android system tablets, guaranteeing that it is very easy to use.
  • Sony Tablet: Sony has launched two tablets: Sony Tablet S and Sony Tablet P. The latter was designed with video games in mind. It has two 5.5” screens and is the first tablet with PlayStation certification. The S model has a 9.4” LCD screen and weighs 580 grams. It includes the Android Honeycomb 3.2 operative system and DLNA technology, to control other electronic equipment through the tablet.

The tablets like these, which follow the guidelines established by Nielsen with regards to dimensions and features, are the most appreciated by users and therefore the best-selling options on the market.

Semantix at the 2012 Mobile World Congress

Marc Centelles - January 25th, 2012

It is time again for the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. This international exhibition, where the focus is on mobile telephone technology, will take place from 27th February to 1st March. Mobile service providers, telephone manufacturers and content distributors, among others, will show the world the products they have recently added to their portfolios and even some that are still under development.

The 2012 MWC also includes a programme of conferences about the most important novelties. These conferences are a great opportunity to hear the sector’s most renowned professionals and learn about the initiatives under way with a view to the immediate future.

Firms and professionals also establish contacts at this event, and there we will be! We will have the opportunity to learn first-hand about the innovations developed in the mobile telephony field in the last year and we will also be able to present Dixio, our smart dictionary.

Last year, the Mobile World Congress attracted around 50,000 mobile telephony professionals from more than 180 countries.

Dixio at CES 2012

Marc Centelles - January 17th, 2012

Last week, the Las Vegas Convention Center closed the 2012 International Electronics Show (CES). The convention is a showplace for technological novelties in the consumer electronics sector. The stars of this edition were 3D televisions, cameras, tablets, smartphones, domestic connectivity items and electronics for motor vehicles.

Semantix was present at this edition of CES. Sam Licciardi, the Semantic Business Development Manager in the United States, presented the Dixio technology for e-readers and tablets, with direct reference to recent successes in Spain: Movistar ebook bq, Fnacbook and Tagus (Casa del Libro). They are the first e-readers on the market that contain Dixio, the smart dictionary, as a differential value.

As we have seen at this edition of CES, the current trend is for technological and electronic devices to be increasingly easy to use and present aesthetic innovations. Following this trend, technology manufacturers such as Semantix aim to present products that not only provide entertainment but also make users’ lives easier and more convenient.

CES, organised by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), welcomes more than 2,000 professionals from companies involved in the design, development, manufacture, distribution and integration of consumer electronics products.

Be careful with your e-reader in airports!

Marc Centelles - January 4th, 2012

The Telegraph, a British newspaper, has published an article about the complaints of several users whose e-readers stopped working after passing through airport security. X-rays were initially blamed for the problem, but some experts say that the radiation of an airport scanner is not strong enough to affect an e-ink screen.

There is a second hypothesis, however. It is that e-ink screens can be damaged by the static electricity generated by the rubber on airport conveyors.

In any event, we share this information with you so that you can take the necessary steps to prevent your e-reader from being affected.

Can I download Dixio eReader Solution for my tablet?

Marc Centelles - December 28th, 2011

This year, Dixio technology, with its Dixio eReader Solution version, has been classified as one of the best dictionary applications for e-reader and tablet users, as shown by the Movistar (Movistar bq ereader), Fnac (Libro electrónico Fnac) and Casa del Libro (Tagus) e-readers. All three include our smart dictionary, with which users can instantly look up the meaning of words.

Several users of other e-readers and tablets have asked us whether they can download Dixio for their devices, but the application cannot currently be directly downloaded. For the time being, the only devices that have the added value of the smart dictionary are those mentioned above, Movistar bq ereader, Libro electrónico Fnac and Tagus, which come with the program already installed.

However, we are working on making the application available for Android Market and iTunes in the not too distant future, so that all users can download Dixio to their devices.

2011, Semantix opening new pathways

Marc Centelles - December 21st, 2011

We are about to say goodbye to 2011. Another year is ending and it is time to consider what it brought us. In Semantix, 2011 was a year in which we both advanced along previous pathways and, more important still, explored and opened new ones.

Our greatest achievement this year has certainly been our entry in the emerging e-reader sector. Movistar, Fnac and Casa del Libro have all included Dixio as an added value in their recently launched devices, Movistar Bq ereader, Fnacbook and Tagus. And if that wasn’t enough, Intel has also included our smart dictionary in its catalogue of points for education.

Dixio, our smart dictionary, has strengthened its position on the digital platforms of different sector, such as the Instituto de Empresa educational platforms or the Wolters Kluwer CISSonline and El Derecho legal platforms; it has also entered the US educational sector through the Clearwater Academy in Florida.

At the same time, we have continued to spread the news about our intelligent technology by participating at fairs and events. In 2011, we attended the CES and DevLearn in Las Vegas, Digital Book World in New York, EduCause in Philadelphia, Liber and Ficod in Madrid; we exhibited at the eReaders 2011 Conference in San Francisco and, in Berlin, we attended IFA and subsequently Online Educa, where we presented Dixio to the world publishing and educational sectors.

It is with great satisfaction that we have seen how people’s perception of Dixio has improved practically day by day. Numerous international education and program download portals now recommend Dixio as a tool for understanding what words mean according to their context. Indeed, there have been more than 110,000 downloads from Softonic and Dixio can be found in 150 blogs from different countries. Furthermore, many websites continue to trust in Dixio to add value to their publications, such as El Economista, Diario Público and Eroski Consumer in Spain, or Vanguardia and La Jornada in Mexico.

We are ending 2011 on an optimistic note, then, sure that in 2012 we will be presenting more news and improvements related to our product. We hope that you will continue to help us to achieve this.

Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year!

E-readers and tablets, the most popular gifts this Christmas

Marc Centelles - December 16th, 2011

Among the large variety of technological items for sale, the protagonists this year are tablets and e-readers, which are expected to be the most popular gifts this Christmas.

After Amazon brought the Kindle to Spain, and Fnac and Casa del Libro launched their own e-readers, the variety of devices available has improved considerably, and they are very popular among Spanish users. Adults, adolescents and children all want one, for leisure, study or work. Indeed, some experts believe that tablets and e-readers will become essential devices in the next few years.

It seems that Santa’s sleigh and the Wise Men’s sacks will be loaded with e-readers this year, such as the recently launched Fnac e-reader, Tagus (Casa del Libro) and Movistar eBook Bq. All three are in Spanish and have Dixio technology, the smart dictionary that defines or translates any word instantly, in context.

And, of course, we cannot forget the world’s most popular e-reader, Amazon’s Kindle, which is the best-selling device together with Sony e-readers.

The most popular tablets continue to be Apple’s Ipad, the Samsung Galaxy tab and Kindle Fire, among others.

We hope you have been good and will receive your favourite device this Christmas.

Merry Christmas!

The RAE on an e-reader for the first time with Dixio technology

Marc Centelles - December 5th, 2011

Casa del Libro launches Tagus eReader, the first to include the Real Academia Española’s dictionary

Diccionario de la Real Academia de la Lengua EspañolaTagus eReader has entered Casa del Libro stores in the best possible way. It is the first device to include Diccionario de la Lengua Española edited by Real Academia Española (RAE) with Dixio technology. The most renowned of all Spanish dictionaries and Dixio, the smart dictionary technology, have joined forces to provide the best possible content at a touch.

Diccionario de la Lengua Española, with more than 88,000 entries, has been digitized in .dix format, with which Dixio technology now recognized more than 4,780,000 terms (conjugated verbs, plurals, feminine nouns, idioms, derivatives or verbs with atonic pronouns). The version of the smart dictionary for Tagus eReader also includes three other dictionaries, Wordnet for definitions in English and the Semantix Spanish-English and English-Spanish bilingual dictionaries.

The readers who use this new e-reader will thus have all the features of the smart dictionary. When they tap a word that they do not understand, Dixio analyses the context, detects the language and instantly displays the best definition or translation in a pop-up window, without the reader having to first select a dictionary.

Tagus eReader, at the price of 119 €, measures 154 x 125 x 10.9 mm and weighs 244 g. It has a six inch e-ink screen, 2 GB of internal memory and Wifi connection and is compatible with PDF, EPUB, TXT, CHM, FB2 or DJVU text formats.

Casa del Libro has designed this e-reader to be connected to its own online store, helping the user to buy digital books. The device can access the book cloud both online and offline, from any browser, smartphone or tablet, or from the e-reader itself. Another of its particularities is that it includes social functions so that readers can share notes or questions about books.

Also note that, until 31 January 2012, Tagus eReader will be sold with the Planeta Award winning novel El Imperio eres tú, by Javier Moro.

With the digitization of Diccionario de la Lengua Española, Real Academia Española and Editorial Espasa (Grupo Planeta) have taken a major step forwards in encouraging the use of dictionaries, helping readers to instantly look up words without being distracted from their reading. This should also be an incentive for other publishers with dictionaries or encyclopaedias in their catalogues.

Fnacbook with Dixio, the smart dictionary

Marc Centelles - December 1st, 2011

Fnac e-reader users can look up the meaning of a word by touching it on the screen

Users of the Fnacbook, the e-reader recently presented by Fnac, have the help of Dixio, the smart dictionary. The new device, besides being in Spanish, provides users with the possibility of looking up the meaning of words they come across while reading, thanks to the innovative dictionary technology developed by Semantix, the only one of its kind in the world. This e-reader, manufactured by Bq, is the second Spanish device with its own store.

The version of Dixio included in the e-reader provides immediate response each time. When you tap twice on the word you don’t understand, Dixio instantly provides you with its definition, without disturbing your reading. Fnacbook users have more than a million dictionary entries at their disposal thanks to Dixio:
- Diccionario Clave de uso del español actual by Ediciones SM,
- Wordnet, and
- the Semantix Spanish-English, English-Spanish dictionary.

Another of the properties of the Dixio version developed by Semantix for the Fnacbook e-reader is that it recognises words that do not have their own dictionary entries. For instance, if the user can touch a conjugated verb (“has left”), plurals (“flowers”) or female words in Spanish (“hermana”), derivatives (“smallish”) or verbal forms with atonic pronouns in Spanish (“cómetelo”) and Dixio will always go to the main dictionary entry (“leave”, “flower”, “hermano”, “small”, “comer”).

However, the feature that distinguishes Dixio from other digital dictionaries is its contextual disambiguation. Because “tied” does not mean the same thing in “tongue tied” as in “tied house “, and “tail” does not mean the same thing in “dog’s tail” as in “on my tail”. When you touch “tied” or “tail” in these expressions, Dixio analyses the context, detects the language and immediately provides the best definition or translation in a pop-up window. Dixio uses the Sematix language engine to perform this analysis, integrating both linguistic processes and natural language and artificial intelligence processing components.

About Dixio
Besides the version for e-readers, Dixio is also available in its Dixio Desktop modalities for PC, MAC and Linux both locally and online, and Dixio ForWeb for websites or Dixio Mobile for online mobiles.

Dixio operates with more than 100 dictionaries, so users have more than 23 million words at their disposal. It also provides permanent access to the latest information with encyclopaedic sources such as Wikipedia.
