Nielsen Norman Group, one of the most world renowned agencies specializing in usability, has acknowledged Semantix with the Nielsen award for Dixio, the smart dictionary. It is thus recognized as the best designed multiplatform application of 2012, based on the principles of usability, which require applications to be easy to use and intuitive for users.

Dixio certainly meets these requirements, and that has been confirmed by the greatest international authority. They are also met by the other winners in the same category, Highlight and Mobile Unified Communications (UC).

Nielsen primarily evaluated Dixio’s adaptation to the different supports on which it can be used, which was achieved by considering each device’s limitations and, in particular, what their users need or expect to find. We find that it is essential to know our users if we are to provide them with a good experience.

With Dixio we have given the dictionary a new look and feel, and it has become more like a gadget than an application. It is like a personal assistant who only appears when he is needed. Our tool supplements reading in a very subtle manner, without distracting the user. Dixio, then, provides support for readers.

As you know, Dixio is the smart dictionary, and it is available in three versions: Dixio Desktop (for computers), Dixio eReader Solution (for smartphones, e-readers and tablets) and Dixio ForWeb (for website).

Try it here!

Congratulations to the Semantix team!

We are about to say goodbye to 2011. Another year is ending and it is time to consider what it brought us. In Semantix, 2011 was a year in which we both advanced along previous pathways and, more important still, explored and opened new ones.

Our greatest achievement this year has certainly been our entry in the emerging e-reader sector. Movistar, Fnac and Casa del Libro have all included Dixio as an added value in their recently launched devices, Movistar Bq ereader, Fnacbook and Tagus. And if that wasn’t enough, Intel has also included our smart dictionary in its catalogue of points for education.

Dixio, our smart dictionary, has strengthened its position on the digital platforms of different sector, such as the Instituto de Empresa educational platforms or the Wolters Kluwer CISSonline and El Derecho legal platforms; it has also entered the US educational sector through the Clearwater Academy in Florida.

At the same time, we have continued to spread the news about our intelligent technology by participating at fairs and events. In 2011, we attended the CES and DevLearn in Las Vegas, Digital Book World in New York, EduCause in Philadelphia, Liber and Ficod in Madrid; we exhibited at the eReaders 2011 Conference in San Francisco and, in Berlin, we attended IFA and subsequently Online Educa, where we presented Dixio to the world publishing and educational sectors.

It is with great satisfaction that we have seen how people’s perception of Dixio has improved practically day by day. Numerous international education and program download portals now recommend Dixio as a tool for understanding what words mean according to their context. Indeed, there have been more than 110,000 downloads from Softonic and Dixio can be found in 150 blogs from different countries. Furthermore, many websites continue to trust in Dixio to add value to their publications, such as El Economista, Diario Público and Eroski Consumer in Spain, or Vanguardia and La Jornada in Mexico.

We are ending 2011 on an optimistic note, then, sure that in 2012 we will be presenting more news and improvements related to our product. We hope that you will continue to help us to achieve this.

Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year!

The Semantix team

Casa del Libro launches Tagus eReader, the first to include the Real Academia Española’s dictionary

Tagus eReader has entered Casa del Libro stores in the best possible way. It is the first device to include Diccionario de la Lengua Española edited by Real Academia Española (RAE) with Dixio technology. The most renowned of all Spanish dictionaries and Dixio, the smart dictionary technology, have joined forces to provide the best possible content at a touch.

Diccionario de la Lengua Española, with more than 88,000 entries, has been digitized in .dix format, with which Dixio technology now recognized more than 4,780,000 terms (conjugated verbs, plurals, feminine nouns, idioms, derivatives or verbs with atonic pronouns). The version of the smart dictionary for Tagus eReader also includes three other dictionaries, Wordnet for definitions in English and the Semantix Spanish-English and English-Spanish bilingual dictionaries.

The readers who use this new e-reader will thus have all the features of the smart dictionary. When they tap a word that they do not understand, Dixio analyses the context, detects the language and instantly displays the best definition or translation in a pop-up window, without the reader having to first select a dictionary.

Tagus eReader, at the price of 119 €, measures 154 x 125 x 10.9 mm and weighs 244 g. It has a six inch e-ink screen, 2 GB of internal memory and Wifi connection and is compatible with PDF, EPUB, TXT, CHM, FB2 or DJVU text formats.

Casa del Libro has designed this e-reader to be connected to its own online store, helping the user to buy digital books. The device can access the book cloud both online and offline, from any browser, smartphone or tablet, or from the e-reader itself. Another of its particularities is that it includes social functions so that readers can share notes or questions about books.

Also note that, until 31 January 2012, Tagus eReader will be sold with the Planeta Award winning novel El Imperio eres tú, by Javier Moro.

With the digitization of Diccionario de la Lengua Española, Real Academia Española and Editorial Espasa (Grupo Planeta) have taken a major step forwards in encouraging the use of dictionaries, helping readers to instantly look up words without being distracted from their reading. This should also be an incentive for other publishers with dictionaries or encyclopaedias in their catalogues.

Fnac e-reader users can look up the meaning of a word by touching it on the screen

Users of the Fnacbook, the e-reader recently presented by Fnac, have the help of Dixio, the smart dictionary. The new device, besides being in Spanish, provides users with the possibility of looking up the meaning of words they come across while reading, thanks to the innovative dictionary technology developed by Semantix, the only one of its kind in the world. This e-reader, manufactured by Bq, is the second Spanish device with its own store.

The version of Dixio included in the e-reader provides immediate response each time. When you tap twice on the word you don’t understand, Dixio instantly provides you with its definition, without disturbing your reading. Fnacbook users have more than a million dictionary entries at their disposal thanks to Dixio:
- Diccionario Clave de uso del español actual by Ediciones SM,
- Wordnet, and
- the Semantix Spanish-English, English-Spanish dictionary.

Another of the properties of the Dixio version developed by Semantix for the Fnacbook e-reader is that it recognises words that do not have their own dictionary entries. For instance, if the user can touch a conjugated verb (“has left”), plurals (“flowers”) or female words in Spanish (“hermana”), derivatives (“smallish”) or verbal forms with atonic pronouns in Spanish (“cómetelo”) and Dixio will always go to the main dictionary entry (“leave”, “flower”, “hermano”, “small”, “comer”).

However, the feature that distinguishes Dixio from other digital dictionaries is its contextual disambiguation. Because “tied” does not mean the same thing in “tongue tied” as in “tied house “, and “tail” does not mean the same thing in “dog’s tail” as in “on my tail”. When you touch “tied” or “tail” in these expressions, Dixio analyses the context, detects the language and immediately provides the best definition or translation in a pop-up window. Dixio uses the Sematix language engine to perform this analysis, integrating both linguistic processes and natural language and artificial intelligence processing components.

About Dixio
Besides the version for e-readers, Dixio is also available in its Dixio Desktop modalities for PC, MAC and Linux both locally and online, and Dixio ForWeb for websites or Dixio Mobile for online mobiles.

Dixio operates with more than 100 dictionaries, so users have more than 23 million words at their disposal. It also provides permanent access to the latest information with encyclopaedic sources such as Wikipedia.

Semantix. To understand and write better
Established by Mikel Urizarbarrena, Semantix develops computer tools to enhance comprehension in communication. Semantix solutions facilitates communication between the speakers of different languages. The Semantix team comprises engineers, linguists, lexicographers, translators and computing experts.

The company, which is headquartered in Spain and has an office in the United States, is the only one in the world to develop this type of technology.
