This is the title of the lecture to be given by Carlos Martín at the first TEDxRamblas on education. Semantix brings its semantic technology to the educational world through two applications developed by its team: Dixio (Dixio Desktop, Dixio forWeb and Dixio Mobile) and Xtyle.

Both of these applications use a linguistic engine to make it easier to understand what is being read and facilitate communication between people. Their functions include Dixio’s ability to eliminate ambiguity from a meaning, depending on the context, or that of detecting whether that word is part of a phrase, a compound element or another multiword concept to give the exact meaning required by the student. An example of the capability of the linguistic engine is the separable phrasal verbs in English: the verb “to wash away” in a sentence such as “Floods in Bangladesh have washed hundreds of homes away” could be understood as “to wash” in reference to ‘clean with water’, but our APP detects the preposition in the particular context and offers the right meaning, i.e., ‘eliminate’.

As already discussed, Semantix will be presenting its most successful educational applications, Dixio and Xtyle, at the TEDXRamblas event. The first of these, Dixio, is a multidictionary that is able to give the meaning or most suitable translation of a word within its context by just clicking on that word, whereas Xtyle comprises the natural evolution of a spell checker which, by means of improvements in spelling, grammar and style guides, can help students improve their writing.

We look forward to seeing you at the next edition of TEDxRamblas. Follow us via streaming.

“Semantic technology applied to education” is the title of the conference to be given by Carlos Martín, CEO of Semantix, at the TEDXRamblas conference at 5 pm on January 20 in the Museo Marítimo of Barcelona.

Semantix, based in Barcelona, has developed a language engine which, by means of its three applications – Dixio Desktop, Dixio forWeb and Dixio Mobile -, facilitates communication between people. These tools, adapted to the world of education, deliver extraordinary support to day-to-day teaching work. For example, the Spanish expression “solución de continuidad” [break in continuity] has a meaning which cannot be understood just by adding up the meanings of the words “solución” and “continuidad”; or in English, the verb “to give up” does not just mean “to give”. Only the language engine developed by Semantix can detect whether a word is part of a sentence, a compound or another figure of speech and provide the exact meaning the learner needs. And we all know that in learning, immediate solutions that allow us to focus on understanding the whole and not get lost in details, is greatly appreciated.

TEDXRamblas and Espiral. The TED abbreviation comprises three major areas: Technology, Entertainment and Design. The Espiral association, an organisation committed to innovation and creativity in education and technology, has taken up the challenge, for the first time ever, of organising the TEDXRamblas, un paseo por el aprendizaje [A walk through learning], in Barcelona.
Semantix would like to wish the Espiral Association and its President Juanmi Muñoz all the best in this initiative.
